Personal background
I'm an ex Radio Operator (only 32 years old) who now works as an Environmental Officer for one of the largest Cruise Lines in the world (I'll let you guess which one!). Live in Scotland not far from Edinburgh in a house I've just bought. Love to surf the net and am trying to write a novel (trying being the operative word!!). Been letting my computers work on SETI@Home since August 4, 1999. Wow - has it been that long!!!???
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have to quote a line from Contact, the movie when Jodi Foster's father in the movie says (and I'm sure I'm paraphrasing), "If we are alone, then it's an awful waste of space."
I'm sure you understand the sentiments in any case... I hate to think that we are alone in the universe - it means we're so very much alone and I can't imagine that being true of something as beautiful as our universe (perhaps it's not ours after all!!). I hope we discover extraterrestrial life in my own lifetime and I believe we will find signs of primative life (perhaps on Mars) but as to intelligent life - I don't know. If we don't blow ourselves up before we make (or they make) contact then I hope they are cautious enough to send probes or something before they drop in on the lawn of whatever superpower they choose... I tend to think they'll be treated with much scepticism and fear. We'll probably shoot first then disect later!!
As for transmitting a beacon, I think out television and radio signals, as weak as they are are the best chance for making contact. They've been transmitting for 50 years or so and should have made the 50 light years journey by now. Who knows where that will lead. It would be a good idea to choose the most likely source for 'earthlike' planets and send a groups of prime numbers on different frequencies (Yeah - just like in Contact!!).
I run SETI@home because I like the idea of taking part in something bigger than just sitting surfing the web or watching the TV. I don't expect to have 'my' PC discover ET signals but if it adds what little processing power to the whole then that's good enough for me. It would be 'cool' if you could actually show what portion of the sky the current workunit instead of just the coordinates.
