Personal background
A native of the Chicago (Illinois) area, born in 1941, I've been a French instructor and interpreter for close to forty years. Astronomy has been an interest for a couple of years, hence I enjoy peering through my ETX-90 on a night under clear skies. I use a Mac G4, drive a Saab, go camping with my son in Scouts, and enjoy watching _Contact_ every once in a while.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I guess if life arose on earth, the chances are pretty good that it would occur under the right conditions on another one of a billion planets in a billion billion other systems in other galaxies.

Should humans trasmit a beacon? Sure, why not? It's too bad, though, that light travels so slowly, considering the immense distances and the limits of human life. They had it right in _Contact_, transmitting a signal in the universal language, mathematics.

Why run SETI? It's probing into the interesting unknown, and making my computer's idle time more useful.
