Personal background |
I am a Technical Writer living in Sonoma County, California. I have a degree in Mathematics from UCLA. Although I have worked in the business world (as opposed to the scientific world) my entire professional career, I have always had a love for science. Running Seti@Home is a way for me to contribute, in a small way, to science. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. "Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?" Yes. Mathematically, I think it is extremely improbable that we are alone. I say this not only for the number of stars and planets in the universe, but even more so for the amazing tenacity and adaptive abilities of known life. It seems to me that such tenaciousness must surely be expressing itself elsewhere.
2. "Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?" Sure. Considering the vast resources that we spend on mundane and wasteful projects, seeking an answer to one of the most profound questions of our existence is perfectly natural and entirely appropriate.
3. "Why do you run SETI@home?" What I love most about science, I think, is the freedom to ask questions and pose hypotheses. In other disciplines, either the answers are taken as "givens" or the answers must fit into predefined ranges. In true science, no such restrictions are placed. |
