Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think we would be fools to believe that there is an entire universe out there that is cometely empty of intelligent life. I think humanity will only discover extraplanetary life when the majority of humans are able to acknowledge the existance of other intelligent life here on Earth (eg, elephants, cetaceans, other primates). I believe it is our own short-sightedness which inhibits us from discovery.
I think it is imperative to state peaceful intentions in any message we send into space. I think it is also important to include information about what we here on earth value. Music, Art, Religion/Spirituality. And to include such information in an unbiased, all-inclusive way - in order to demonstrate that we are a diverse and many-faceted race.
I run SETI because it's an opportunity to lend support to a scientific venture. And as the great sages say, "If you are not part of the Solution, you are part of the Precipitate."
