Profile: Andy R

Personal background
My name is Andy Ruhl and I've used Seti@home off and on for the last 2 years
under various profiles. My hobbies are motorcycles, guitars, and making new
programs work even though I'm not a programmer. I work for a large, large
computer company and I've enjoyed all of the different operating system
platforms I am able to use. The picture is me on the left with one of my heroes,
motorcycle roadracer Doug Chandler.

I just started a new profile as kind of a challenge to get a lot of work units
done in a short amount of time, and also to find out how many different platforms
I can run it on.

Currently I'm running Seti@home on:

NetBSD/i386 (my favorite) (www.netbsd.org)
OpenBSD/i386
FreeBSD/i386 (my 2nd favorite)
Linux/i386
MacOS/ppc
HP-UX/pa-risc
AIX/ppc
WinNT/i386
Win2000/i386
AIX/ppc

I'm working on getting Seti@home running on Solaris soon! I figure that should
put the project through it's paces a bit! Can't wait to get a hold of MacOS X
too... I have a website I'd link but it's pitiful so I won't...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do I think ET's exist? I think the question is almost too complicated to
even address. However, I think it's our responsibility to find out if we can.
I like the famous quote "If we are the only ones, it would be an awful waste
of space."

2. Do I think we should transmit a beacon? Tough to say. Since we haven't
found anything yet I wonder if it would have time to find anything else...
Then, what are the implications of trying to make contact? Too difficult a
question for me, I'll dodge that one.

3. I run Seti@home because I think that computers sitting idle are an
incredible waste of space and energy. It takes quite little energy to run
Seti@home in the background, so why not? Plus, if it's me that finds our
galactic neighbors, I'd sure love to get a part in the movie about it...
Hee hee.

Good luck to the project and tell all your friends! Home computers are getting
ridiculously powerful these days, so why not put it to good use?
