Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
So why run Seti@Home? I mean, come on, everyone looks up to the stars at night. The question "Are we alone?" is just as fundamental as "Why are we here?" and "Who are we anyways?" and it won't get answered by just sitting on your butt in your back yard gazing up at all those tiny points of light in the night sky.
There's just too much stuff out there for life not to exist elsewhere. Will we ever find out? Maybe, if we're listening in the right place at the right time and if the little green men and women have bothered to transmit something detectable. We might even receive the television programmes of those little green men and women, just as our own talk shows and soaps are being hurled into outer space even as you're reading this. I wonder what they'll think of Jerry Springer...
