Personal background
Greetings

I am a student at Sussex University, where I am taking an MA in the Philosophy of Cognitive Science. I have been a member of this Seti project since spring 2000. I wonder if it is beginning to look as though some new technology will be needed if a search is to prove successful.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
In 2001, when I was still living in San Diego I took Professor Bill Welsh's excellent class in Astrobiology at San Diego State University. He is a great teacher--he combines enthusiasm and broad knowledge with a very engaging teaching style.

All my instincts and estimations tell me that life is probably present throughout the universe, wherever a suitable environment (pressure, temperature, hydration etc) exists, although it may well be that hardly any of it is what we would rush to call intelligent.

I suspect that earthly life began deep beneath the surface (where most of it still is) and that any extra terrestrial life that may exist elsewhere in our solar system (i.e., on Mars or Europa) will similarly be hidden well beneath the surface.

I think it was Arthur C. Clarke who said: "sometimes I think were alone, and sometimes I think were not. In either case the prospect is staggering." How right he is.
