Personal background
Hi, my name is René and I'm a Software Engineer, originaly from a little village in the Netherlands but since january 2005 living in Cuernavaca Mexico, since I was a little boy I loved to go out on a clear night and lay on my back to watch the stars for hours. I guess you might say that because of this stargazing I developed an interest for everything related to space and the exploration of it. I might not have become an astronaut but I still have the same imagination and fascination for all that's up there or might be up there since I was that little boy.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? I have to say yes, but I do realise that it doesn't have to be the kind we expect. Life comes in many forms and shapes like we still discover on our own planet right up until this day. I believe there are other planets in this universe that could hold life even when it's only bacterial, so will we discover intelligent life? That question can only be answered by projects like SETI and because I love to dream about everything we could learn from such an encounter, I support it with the small computer capabilities I have. The impact on our lives will be enormous when we do discover signals from another civilisation, the only thing I hope for is that by that time humans will have evolved beyond the point of destroying our own little place in this universe and that we might be able to come up with a responsible reaction to this great event. Discovery has and always will bring with it a certain risk, so I also hope that when we get into contact with another form of life they will respect and wonder about the diversity of life like I do.
