Profile: John Harwood

Personal background
I live in Austin TX, am 32 and have had a lifelong interest and fascination with space and space exploration. From my father's time working on the Apollo project, to growing up around the Johnson Space Center and watching shows like Cosmos, I've always had an affinity for space and welcome the opportunity to contribute to this project.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm certain that extraterrestrial life must exist given the size and age of the universe, but am uncertain whether intelligent life is close enough to us for meaningful conversation given current methods and technology. It could be quite dangerous to establish communication with an aggressive race, but I think it far more likely that sufficiently advanced races will be benign, and just the knowledge that other creatures exist in the universe would have a profound effect on our views of ourselves and the universe.

I think humans are already constantly transmitting beacons through our radio and television communications, but an 'official' communication would be wise as well. I think something along the lines of the message sent back in the 70s or similar to the one sent on the Voyager probes would be appropriate.

I run Seti@home just to do my part and help contribute to the greater good. Whether this project has much potential for success or not, it is a very valuable undertaking and the potential if successful is staggering.
