Personal background

I'm a software engineer (programmer) from Ann Arbor, MI. I got interested in science at a very young age (like many others) due to prolonged exposure to Mr. Sagan's fantastic Cosmos series.

While Computer Science is my occupation, mathematics and astronomy are my loves (right behind my wife and kids, and of course, the Lord).

Paul Erdos is one of my heroes, anyone who has not read about this extraordinary man should do so. Sagan is as well, but if you are here, you already know about him - don't you? :-0

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

My opinions of SETI:

I find SETI fascinating because it is such a brute-force way of determining whether or not we are alone. It is a completely inelegant approach to the problem of find extra-terrestrial life. In 100 years or so (maybe less) people will look back at this project a lot like we look back on the pyramids today. They will probably be astounded at what a civilization with comparitively backward technology can achieve!

This may sound a little odd, but I don't really give SETI much more than a slim chance of finding intelligent life out there, even though I am sure that it does exist. Our current methods are simply too primitive. However, I still wouldn't miss the chance of participating in this experiment for the world. Here's hoping the longshot comes in!
