Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
"the only thing we found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other."
i do believe there are other beings in the universe asides from ourselves. if we believe otherwise, we are only pandering to our own hybris and not facing up to the possibilities. the only question is what forms do they take. are they like us in shape and thoughts? do they believe in good and evil? have they made the same mistakes as we have and continue to do? or have they overcome them as i hope we will. are they friend or foe? as i look up at the sky and see the stars and planets move, i often think to myself how life is so precious, how complex it all really is and wonder how the things we do today impact others out there.
SETI is an interesting project as it uses natural means to find potentialities and perhaps to satisfy our own curiousity. we must be a lonely race to seek others. but my only concern is for what we may potentially attract -- curiousity did kill the cat after all. |
