Personal background
Greetings all Seti@homers!

I am 28, female, and live in Canada. Astronomy has always interested me, and thanks to Seti@home, I have been able to participate in this project for the last 3 years! To think, any one of our computers could pick up signs of life from another planet (universe?).....makes you feel kind of small, doesn't it?
There is much to be discovered, and much we will never see in our lifetime. But what a rush to help the next generation get there!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely think extraterrestrial life exists.....what being could be so self-centered NOT to think so? I don't know when or how humans will discover extraterrestrial life....perhaps that life will find US first.

The benefits and dangers of discovering extraterrestrial life are obvious. Things can be shared between humans and extraterrestrials that could improve both beings' lives forever. Unfortunately, I do not think that this will be the case. I think fear will take control, as they will be of a race we do not understand. With fear comes prejudice, and we have all seen the result - hate crimes, racism, bullying....these are (sadly) still happening today. I would like to see extraterrestrial life help humans to evolve to a higher level of consciousness, where racism and hatred are not needed and are not bred into every generation. I also think they could give us a real 'wake-up call'. This would help us all to accept the fact that we are no better or worse than any other race in the Universe. Once we can get past the petty emotions, we can start working on improving ourselves as a species.

I honestly believe many civilizations know where we are already, and are observing us as this is being read.

I run Seti@home because I like to participate in something that could change the world one day. It's also very exciting to think that my computer may pick up communications from another species!
