Profile: Kerchak1

Personal background
Just as a matter of interest, Kerchak was the King of the Apes in
Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan Novels. I am 60 years and older. I was and am
a professional and have worked in a number of fields generally within the
sciences. As a Director of Research I was a part of a number of innovations in
such fields as Thermodynamics, Energy Conversion Systems, Technical Training,
and-so-on.
While I am technically retired, it seems that I am working harder than ever.
Amateur Astronomy, Energy Conversion Research, and a couple of businesses seem
keep me out of (or into) mischief.
Jody Foster is so cute! She was good in "Contact" as were the special effects.
I have a decent telescope and will be setting up a parabolic for the same
frequencies that SETI is scanning. (I hope I live long enough to do so.)
I do not see the need to be as conservative as to use the Drake Formula. Give
me a break, when Infinity enters any equation the result generally approaches
infinity. I really think that E.T.I. is talking to us from every direction but
we are still evolving the "ears" necessary to hear the cacophony.
As a resident of this planet, I can hardly wait to get my "hearing-aid".
I don't have time to count the characters used in this missive so I'll cease
transmitting. Good luck and patience to all.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. The greatest danger in regard to discovery will come FROM THE LACK OF IT!
2. The greatest impact of an E.T.I. contact would be on humanity's parochial
view of the place of this little blue marble in the Universe.
3. It certainly makes it less appealing to annihilate ourselves if we know that
OUR NEIGHBOR IS STILL OUT THERE AFTER THE FACT AND PROBABLY LAUGHING AT US.
4. The concept of "Ganging" world-wide computer resources is not unique to SETI
but was a stroke of genius. Well done! (To the originator of the idea.)
5. If I were sending a signal across the void of space, I would certainly follow
the Keep-It-Simple principle. i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 6 * 8 repeated ad nauseum. The
reply would be 7. Or prime numbers, or other simple patterns, etc.
6. Intensiy of signal is a prime consideration and closely related to the cross-
sectional area of the beam over stellar distances. Could a very advanced
civilization be using a pulsar somewhere to transmit? Too obvious?
7. It might take 1000 years of listening but....what the heck, I'll be a small
part of that.
