I am the responsible editor of http://www.astronomibladet.dk, author of an astronomybook from IDC-publishing and a 'Widefield astrophotographer' hobbyist.

There is only little doubt in my mind to the question if there is- has been or will be anyone out there.
We will probably only find vague traces of their radio emissions - If we ever do. And even if we did it is unlikely that we will be able to establish communication with them. And even IF we succeeded, communications would take generations to come through.
That is a lot of if's...
The real benefit is that humans, if we made THE discovery, would come to realize that we - in spite of religous, national and ethnic differences - are all 'rocking the same boat' and depending on each other.
I run seti@home, because it is a small and free contribution for me to give...
