Personal background
I am a scientist, presently doing research in artificial intelligence and robotic. My home page is http://home.cfl.rr.com and I have information on robotics, space, and computer generated imagery there. I live in Orlando, FL.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists. Physics alone almost guarantees that it will. Whether there are significant numbers of intelligent species is another matter, but we have an obligation to find out whether they exist. Just as we enrich ourselves through exposure to other human cultures, we could only gain from exposure to other, non-human cultures.
I think that a beacon for other civilizations to find would be a worthwhile effort, if only because any natural or human created disaster could forever erase our presence from the universe. If this were to happen, it could be that this beacon might be all that would remain of us for other cultures to find.
If, however, we do send such a beacon, we know that it may be only a matter of decades or less before some other civilization might hear of us. We have already done so inadvertantly; it is now up to us to try to send a clear message that we are not so irresponsible as our television broadcasts might imply. We are in the dubious position of squabbling apartment dwellers who find out that unexpected neighbors know all of our business.
I run SETI@home specifically so that I might make some contribution, no matter how small, to what might become the most important effort of discovery that we as a species might ever embark upon.
