Profile: Lone Wolf

Personal background
I'm a student at Iowa State University, majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Among my goals in life is the hope that I may someday be able to create a space vehicle capable of reaching the intelligent life of other star systems.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1)Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?
As an engineer, I have to rely on data, and as far as extraterrestrial life goes, I believe the term is 'inconclusive.' As an engineer I also have an inherent desire to break the boundaries of what has been done before. If there are intelligent beings outside of earth, the first step is figuring out where they are. The next step, actually meeting them, is something I'll work on for when we do find out where they are.
Being an engineer, I'd love to see their transmission equipment and if possible any space vehicles they might have. We might have more in common with them than we realize, and that could pose a few problems. If they get offended or have attitudes similar to humans, we could be in for one very offensive first meeting with them.
