Profile: Stel Pavlou

Personal background
I'm a writer living in the UK. My most recent novel is Gene, other works include Decipher and the film The 51st State. I love movies and have a large collection of them. I'm a huge Humphrey Bogart fan. I'm also an avid gamer, ranging from Counter Strike online and Half Life/2, Doom3, Call of Duty and Medal of Honour, to Morrwind and the entire Bladur's Gate series. I'd love to develop computers games and use my skills as a storyteller and fine artist in tandem but finding a way so far has proved harder then breaking into Hollywood!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because I believe it's an honest way of doing things. Contact with an extra terrestrial civilization will effect everyone, I think it's only right that as many people as possible are involved with such a discovery.

The benefits of meeting ETs far outway the negatives. In all likelyhood whether the ETs are friendly or not, humankind will probably band together and begin to bury our differences. We would be forced to speak as one voice and that will have profound effects. Technology will leap forward, not necessarily because we have been given anything, but as with war, technology invariably leaps ahead because new ideas are allowed to be tried to overcome obsticals. Challenges in communications, space travel and defence/offense would suddenly need to be solved on a very real level. ETs would make us change from within.

Of course, I'd like to know all about the ETs, but we as a species always put our own self interests first, even when we claim we're not doing so.
