I think that we would be foolish to think that in a universe of infinite probability, that it is improbable that there are other sentient organisms of some type. When will we discover it? Thats kind of a crapshoot...we will discover it when we have done sufficient study such as to do so :> When it comes to the benefits and dangers, obviously thats a matter of perspective. You jam your hand into a bees nest and see what happens...
I run SETI for simple curiosity. And my equipment is suitable to run it ceaselessly.
