Personal background
I'm a 47 year-old executive in the computer services industry. I started out as a programmer back when the computer had a whopping 64K of memory and everything I wrote was in an assembler language. Over the years I moved away from the technical work and into management but my main hobby is still computers. I'm currently living in Florida with my wife and two kids (both in college), but I've also lived in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Indiana, Texas, California and Germany (not in that order, however.)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have to believe that given the vastness of the universe we can't be the only sentient lifeforms around. It's ironic though, that although the magnitude of the universe makes life more probable, it also makes it less easy to be found. Will we find something in the next 10 or 20 years? Possibly, but we need to increase the scope of the search if we want to increase our chances. I think finding proof of other life in the universe would fuel some great discussions among scientists, politicians, and religious groups. It would also create some interesting sideshows with some of our less conventional fringe groups.
