Personal background
I'm a professional translator and editor, currently living in France, originally from Springfield/Eugene, Oregon (USA). I also spent two years in Finland with my partner. Both of us grew up as astronomy buffs and astronaut-wish-to-be's. We travel extensively on our tiny budget and enjoy experiencing different cultures. Our participation in this project (since Seti@Home runs on our shared computer) is our small way of contributing a gigahertz and a half of processing power to a cause we're fond of.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it's very likely extraterrestrial life exists, though no one could quite say when and how - if! - humans will ever discover it. The only possible danger of such a discovery would be initial fear on the part of humankind, since any alien life we could have direct contact with would probably be much more advanced than us (assuming that advanced means peaceful and intelligent). As for a beacon sent by mankind, I think it's already been done without necessarily having planned it!

My partner and I run SETI@home because of the possibilities any discovered knowledge could bring.
