Personal background
My name is Robert and I am an 18 year old college freshmen majoring in the NASA related sciences at Florida International University. I'm seriously thinking of transfering to a more indepth astro-aero-nomical institution such as UCF or another school near NASA headquarters in Houston. My immediate goal is to be in a NASA internship such as the ones being offered at Johnson and Kennedy Space Centers. I've actually been to Kennedy Space Center and Launch Control in Cape Canaveral,Florida and I am joining the Miami Astronomical Society. It's not easy studing Astronomy and Astrophysics, but I'm confident I can persevere in the NASA related sciences. I'm also thinking of double majoring in Astronomy and either Biology(Astro and Terran) or Genetics. I was a heavy believe in Extra Terrestrial life before I entered college and took Astronomy. Mind you I am currently in Solar System Astro, not Stellar, and still the numbers about distances are soooooo vast that I have re-evaluated my belief in the possibilities of ET reaching Earth. I am a firm believer in that they exist and are highly advanced(much more so than us). However, considering that the center of our galaxy is 14,718x10 to the 12th-power miles away from earth and that it takes 2,453 light years to reach it, I have realized that any advanced civilation must have technology spanning the unimaginabely improbable to reach the Earth from another galaxy,or even this one.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

The possible benefits of discovering ET are obviously in expanding our knowledge of the known universe. Also they would provide ways for us to increase and adapt our own technology by studing theirs. And most importantly, discovering ET will unite mankind in a way no one thinks is possible when we realize we are not alone in the universe. The dangers of discovering others is obvious, and has been the topic of endless amounts of science fiction movies. Not every species we encounter will necessarily be peaceful(and by peaceful I don't mean man is, because we are not, but I don't think we'll go around conquering planets either). We have a beautiful planet, others may want to take it from us. Anyone who thinks that isn't a possibility is ignorant.
