Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. I think ET life exists. There are millions and millions of planets and it is probably that we are NOT alone in the universe. I think it is only question of time when we will find another life form in other star system; approximately 20 years maximally. I'm not sure if it is SETI or something else but SETI offers good opportunity. I think that within 5 years computer power of SETI clients will be large enough to scan the sky in real time (with coming of powerful RISC processors etc.). Possible benefits of contact - technology exchange, medicine inventions, space travel, knowledge that we are not alone and thus not something special in the universe (I think many pple don't like this though the most). Dangers - if they would be like us, they could be dangerous (war-liking etc.)
2. Humans should transmit permanent beacon if possible with basic information about us. We should not send them our DNA or similar informations, but something of art, high spirit etc.
3. I run SETI because I believe I can help. I hope that this project will bring it's fruit. But what then? What will more than 4.5 million computers do than? Of course, there are other promising projects like looking for AIDS cure.
My suggestions: Improve optimalization for different CPUs, try to negotiate with graphic card and sound card chipsets manufacturers - these cards are in most of cases unused and their computing performance is so big that it would fasten Fast Fourier Transformation alot. |
