Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the odds are that life does exist on other planets, and they must have a tech level to equal and more than likley exceed ours.

As how many things are discovered in science, contact will probably be made when we least expect it, and probably through a media where we would not normally or usually look or expect to find it.

(Should we transmit a becon?) Well I believe that we seem to hold off on doing that for the same reasons as any extraterrestrial life probably would. There are security risks I guess who knows whom you would be inviting to dinner so to speak.

I find that runnng Seti at home give my PC's a task that will benifit us all one day and to play a small part is well, just doing my bit. If you have to have a screen saver why not make it SETI!
