Personal background
I am a NASA Engineer at the John F. Kennedy Space Center. My son and I run SETI At Home from our home in Cocoa, Florida, just about 15 “crow-miles” from the launch pads. We have two computers spending their “off-time” crunching and submitting SETI data – and they are happy to have something to keep them occupied, by the way! I try and never miss a live Shuttle and rocket launch, and I have seen hundreds. I also frequently run into many astronauts and enjoy speaking to them about what it is like to fly into space. I have had the privilege of working onboard every NASA Space Shuttle except Challenger (before liftoff), and I always try and oogle the Space Station segments before they are launched. It is just so awesome to be close to and be able to see and touch the people and hardware that flies off into space. Alas, it is not like actually going myself, but perhaps it is the next best thing! Meanwhile, I am about to finish my first SciFi novel about a Mars colony. You can see a preview of it it at: http://quantumeditions.com.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Even better than just being around all the space stuff at the Cape is being able to participate in making it all happen. SETI At Home is just such an opportunity for anyone with a computer anywhere on earth (and someday off-earth). Is there anyone out there? It is one of the most important questions humankind will ever ask. It is unbelievably awesome that the SETI At Home folks have figured out a way to let us all join in the search! Their genius is very profound – it allows for massive computational work to be done at virtually zero cost just as it allows millions of us “regular people” to join in and contribute. It gives us all an opportunity to participate in the most significant scientific investigation ever launched just as it gives reason to celebrate our own unique part in this historic achievement. Wow! Any other good ideas?
