Personal background
I'm from Indiana - from a town so small they closed the post office for cost effectiveness 20 years ago (Acton, just outside of Wanamaker). I've worked on computers since the age of 10 - that was 17 years ago. Now I'm here on the east coast.
I write stories, music. I program and fix hardware on computers and run around and take pictures of stuff like haunted houses. I used to teach up until 5 years ago in children museums and I miss it - I started when I was 13. Now I just work with 'puters at a most famous tool factory in Towson.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, ET does exist. If they didn't, what would be the excuse for wasting all "right" probablilities on this planet... but seriously.. There has to life on other planets because since every star represents a "sun" then I'm sure a couple out of those countless billions have worlds wondering around just as confused as we are. As to when we'll find is may never fall in my life time since they may be just like us; and can you imagine 2 earths getting together and finding the other.
That also lends me to the dangers of how "earths" similar to us would react to each other. We're having a hard enough time with the concept of the "global community". Can you imagine the "universal community"!
That's not to say that every other "ET" out there is just like us, it just that a "higher" intellegence would a. deem it nessisary to hide from us for our safty or b. see us as mere ants and nothing more.

Yes we should send out a signal. We have to do something to imprint or identity out there. For us to just sit here and do nothing is not in our nature, but I'm not sure what we should send out. Maybe a lie that tells them "we're ready".

I run seti because I want to get involved, though I didn't realise the competition involved with this project. I think it's exciting to be activing looking for life out there. I'm sure were not the only one's out here. I know for a fact. That why I run this program. Life will always reach out for life.
