Personal background
Well, at the ripe old age of 50 I've had a computer for about a year and a half. So now I spend my time going to school to learn as much as I can. Had to learn everything from scratch, including typing! Currently, I'm studing the Microsoft Office applications and some other minor things. I have an Expert certificate in Word and Excel. Plan on PowerPoint and Access next along with Windows 2000 OS. I guess I have learned a good deal as I just installed Windows 2000 on my computer from Win98. I did a complete format of the hard drive and did the whole mess from scratch. It took all day and then some.
I guess computers are my hobbie and occupation(school)right now. It really ticks me off when I have to do other chores and obligations. There is so much to learn and so little time to take it all in to get up to speed. This is all so interesting to me. Other than that, I'm currently disabled and take care of my Mom. Not very interesting am I? LOL!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Does extraterrestrial life exist? Most likely.
2. When and how discovery? I'm not so sure that they aren't already here! Never met one though, but then how would I know for sure?
3. Benefits and dangers? Some people will be mad, afraid, happy, courious. Life is a crap shoot all you can do is roll the dice and see what happens.
4. Should we transmit a beacon? We have been doing that since before TV. All those radio and broadcast waves go somewhere. I don't think it matters what we send, they aren't going to understand it. As far as I'm concerned the "I Love Lucy" show is fine.
5. I ran Seti when I heard about it on a local news report. I figured it was a good cause and it did make use of the computer down time. I really hate rebooting several times a day, so this gave me a good excuse to let it run all day. Of course, the power bill went up. Just goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished. If I had a faster proccessor I'd run it while I'm working on the computer as well. I only have a 500Mhz Celeron and it does tend to make things drag a bit if I do more than 2 things at once. I haven't tried to do that since I increased the memory though.
