Profile: Blue Star Mom

Personal background
Well, let's see. I'm the mother of three, with one grandchild and another on the way. I used to read to my children at bedtime when they were little. I suppose all mothers do, but I think I might have been unusual in my choices of reading material. They grew up hearing about Bilbo, Frodo and Aslan. Of course they heard all the Suessian tales as well, but they enjoyed the adventures more I think. As you can probably tell I enjoy reading, and love most anything that is a good rollicking fantasy adventure. We started to do some serious landscaping of our small rural home, including a small vineyard, an orchard, some unusual tropical fruit trees as well as the more standard oranges, pears and figs. I have rose bushes, as well as a small "fantasy" garden with a pond, waterfall, numerous hand painted statues and fountains scattered throughout. All of this is interspersed with many varieties of exotic lilies, caladium, tea roses and other seasonal flowers. My pride and joy(s) though are two trees at either end of the garden. One is a hugh mimosa, the other is a smaller Japanese magnolia.

I love frogs, and my family sometimes competes to see who can give me the strangest froggie for my birthday. So far hubby is winning with an apple jade "dragon-toad". Yes... it is as strange looking as it sounds.

I also enjoy primitive camping, and even though I'm not one for my husband's more dramatic primitive survival skills (I'll never get the hang of starting a fire with his bow drill!), I still enjoy going with him when he teaches those skills to others and being the official photographer. The picture of me that is in this profile was taken in front of one of his larger and more "luxurious" survival shelters, and yes.... that is wolf. That one's name is Thor, and contrary to accepted popular "knowledge", we found that not only were the three wolves that we've owned over the years more goof-balls than anything else, but that most other owners felt the same way about theirs too.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI@home.... Hmmmm. I guess it should be obvious that I'm happy to have discovered the project.... after all, I am a user! As to beacons and other intentional transmissions I'd have to ask "why bother?" To be honest, the people of our planet have been transmitting unintentionally to space for many years now and I can't help but believe that if there is alien life out there that is interested in, and capable of, finding us they will when they're ready to.... Or perhaps they already have.......

To be honest, I'm a firm believer in life elsewhere in the universe. I'm a Christian, and while I know there are some folks out there that seem to think that belief in life on other planets somehow is sinful, I'm more of the belief that God in his awesome power and wonder has created a vast array of life in the universe.

I can hardly wait to meet them!!!

My husband happens to be a SF author as well, and one of his series of books deals with possible forms of encounters with other worlds. If you're interested in reading about his latest book, "Through Eyes of Shiva", you can find some information at his web home:

The book itself is available through Barnes & Noble online.
