Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
ET life most certainly exists. When will humans find it? No one can say for sure. Humanity really doesn't need to do much in the way of pointing itself out, as there are thousands of 24-hour radio and television broadcasting stations all over the world. What would be a problem is sorting everything out, as the standard frequencies are used by many different stations at once.
I am all for the SETI project, but we must also consider the fact that radio is not the only possible form of wireless telecommunications. Light beams are the simplest of these, and among the most complex, instantaneous communications devices based on quantum physics (The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Paradox, I believe). Communications by light beams would be difficult to detect from vast distances, and an EPR communication device would likely be impossible to detect.
It's also worth noting that even if humans detect radio waves from some far-off place hundreds or thousands of light-years distant, the civilization we detect could be already gone, or exploring our own solar system right under our noses. But the prospect of finding out we are not alone is what's worth the effort. |
