Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It seems unlikely that the universe is so huge, yet so boring that life has only evolved on this tiny flyspeck on a dustmote. At the same time, I am afraid that the speed of light may really turn out to be an insurmountable obstacle to actually sending living humans to distant stars.

If that turns out to be the case, then the most important thing we can do as a species (other than not destroying our own planet)is to attempt to contact other civilizations in ways that don't involve actual travel to those places, since the real prize is probably going to be in the form of information shared between civilizations anyway.

I sometimes feel a little guilty about using my home computer, because it's taking away time from running the SETI screensaver.

I hope that the searches done by SETI become more sophisticated as home computers become more able to handle it, and as more people get involved. I can't imagine a better use for all these idle cycles.
