Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, yes, possible benefits: possible breakthroughs in bio technology/medicine (some rare miracle plant life on another planet?) Dangers: something in the E.T lifeforms dna/phsiology thats lethal to humans (their sweat glands could produce deadly toxins, etc)
2. Yes, the recipe for coca cola and other highly guarded human secrets, in case our species is extinct by the time any ET lifeforms receive our beacon signal.
3. Because its a cool screen saver thats why. The project has great merit. One day, humans will have to adapt and become a space-faring people, or die when our planet is devoured by the sun. Might as well start the groundwork.
