Personal background
I'm 56 and remember being a kid in the 50's and reading a bunch of flying saucer books. Now I have a Ph.D. and I am a senior technologist for a major organization, but space is still facinating. I've been been running SETI almost from the beginning and I should hit 1000 units around September 23, 2001.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As humans, we have been generating radio signals for less than 100 years. We already know that quantum theory could lead us to an instantaneous method of communications. Even if that does not occur, it would certainly be odd if we don't find ways to communicate that are better than RF in the not too distant future.

So, why is it that we think we will hear anything in the RF range from other intelligences. After all, perhaps the effective life span for RF as our primary means of communication is 200 years--an insignificant period in human evolution and (hopefully) future human existence.

Nevertheless, SETI is probably our best shot for making contact any time soon. I salute the SETI founders and team for making the effort to expand our knowledge of the universe.

After the September 11 madness, we need hope that humans will someday progress beyond mindless, escalating violence. Perhaps SETI will lead in that direction.
