Personal background
I'm from the USA, male, 36 years old. I speak English and Spanish and can work my way around French. I run SETI@Home on a 1.2G Celeron and Windows although, if I ever find a halfway decent set of docs for it, I'm ready to switch to Linux. The thing I find fascinating about the SETI software is that so much computing power is available this way. The computer geek in me thinks that it's just too cool. I've been playing with computers for years (my first computer was a Commodore VIC-20, my first PC was a 8088 XT with DOS 3.30). So I like tweaking and learning new ways to push the computer's limits.

I use a couple of the extra SETI goodies like SETIMon and Distant Suns, but although the screen saver is pretty I still like my flying toasters better.

I also work out regularly and ride a motorcycle and have done crazy things like parachuting out of an airplane. I have a webpage with a variety of material on it at http://home.earthlink.net/~mrgoodbytes/pkhome.html .
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think that ET exists? I have heard both sides of the argument and I have to say that I honestly don't know, as both arguments are compelling.

But think, if ET does exist, what would he say to us? Would he tell us about his technology? Unlikely, because if he's developed enough to send the message, he'll know that by the time the message reaches us the contents will not reflect his level of development. Similarly, he will know that commerce is out of the question due to the same time constraints. Current history will also be ancient history by the time it's received, as will sociology, psychology, etc. What message does NOT have a time limit, is considered worthwhile by the sender no matter how long it takes to arrive? The answer is God. Yes, we might be spending billions of dollars and millions of computer hours to receive the extraterrestrial equivalent of the 700 Club!
