Personal background
Hi

I recently began leaving my computer on 24 hours a day (thank you, OS X), so I figured i should do something useful with all those unused computing cycles. I teach part-time in high school, and I am taking classes in data networking, Unix and Perl. Eventually, I hope to work in Network or Unix systems administration. In my spare time I enjoy reading science fiction, working on cars and playing guitar badly.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that life exists somewhere other than Earth, but I don't know if it exists within1,000 light years of us. SETI is merely a preliminary step in the exploration of space, and while I do not expect any conclusive proof to come from the SETI project any time soon, I would be delighted to be proven wrong.

I think a permanent transmitting beacon is an excellent idea. I would like to see such a beacon, space-based with an independent power system, created withing the next 20 years. But to be truly useful, I would hope that such a beacon would have a life-span of at least 500 years.

I run SETI@home because I believe in the importance of space exploration. If mankind does not move off of Earth at some point, we are eventually doomed. At this point, SETI@home is the only way that I can participate in the scientific exploration of space. I would liketo see SETI include more graphical information about the location of the signal sources that are analyzed by the SETI@home clients.
