Personal background
Who am I? A 30 year old Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada resident, employed in the security field. I seem to spend far too much time playing around with my various websites, and even more time working strange and long hours.

I've been running the Seti@home windows client since 1999 when a friend of mine suggested it was a good way to put my screensaver to use (as far as I know he abandoned the use of the screen saver shortly after he recommended it to me). Only recently have I reconfigured it to run more often. I was quite pleased to break the 500 work unit barrier, and am looking forward to eventually passing the 1K mark.

Myself, I am a dedicated mercenary, always taking extra work when it presents itself (I suggest this will continue until I am comitted under the Mental Health Act of British Columbia), I read voraciously (mainly history, but a good deal of science-fiction (Isaac Asimov, Heinlein etc), Fiction (ranging from LeCarre, Deighton, Ludlum etc) and humour (Douglas Adams - The God, Donald Jack and others). I am also an avid recreational target shooter, a horrible golfer and a reasonably good mountain biker.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist?
Sure why not....we're here. What are the odds that we're the only ones? I'm not sure we'll recognize ETs, frankly we may have made contact already without our knowledge. It might just be a matter of context. Then again maybe theres a huge Vogon constructor fleet headed here RIGHT NOW!.

Why do you run SETI@home?
I run seti@home because its nice to feel that my computer accomplishes more than allowing me internet access, the ability to play video games and free music... its a part of a search than will likely have earth shattering (sorry, that was not another reference to the Vogons) consequences for our society and our future as we know it. I can't imagine our lives would continue as before if the results of a contact were made public....

Of course that assumes no contact has been made, that the results have not been supressed, and that our goverments are looking out for our best interests. Right?
