Personal background
I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I'm a manager of a convenience store/gas station in the area. I love hockey, guitars and Ford Mustangs. I've always had an attraction to space and the stars and hope to someday be a part of humanity contacting life from space...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It is incredible arrogance to think that we are the only intelligent life in the universe. I would bet my life on the idea that intelligent life exists outside of our solar system. How will first contact be made? I really don't know. I really doubt that we're going to find life the way we're looking here with SETI. Space is so vast and communications so very slow that even if we did receive a transmission it would be from a race that could have become extinct a long time before we ever receive their first radio waves. I think if we are going to make contact it will be by them coming to us. There is a great deal of evidence that there has been interaction between us and an extraterrestrial race. I only hope that some details are made public in my lifetime.

Potential benefits and dangers. Well.. if it is a benign race, obviously the advances we could make in technology would be astounding. If it's not benign, that technology would be devestating, assuming that this race advanced militarily in a similar fashion to us. I would just about guarantee that Jeff Goldblum wouldn't be inventing a 21st century earth computer virus that would so easily debilitate them. We would be at their mercy, to either be enslaved or killed outright at their whim. Let's hope they're benign :)
