Personal background
Greetings, universe, I am Tim. I have been a member of the SETI@home team for almost two years now, with my anniversary date around the corner, and have yet to process ground-breaking data! But that's OK, 'cause I grow more and more excited as each day passes.
I'm a resident of the US, always have been - but who knows what the future holds. I grew up in Inwood, a wild neighborhood located at the tip of Manhattan, New York. Inwood's sometimes dubbed as "Upstate Manhattan," as nearly half of the area is beautifully wooded. But nonetheless, it's as fast paced and exciting as the rest of the city.
On a downside, I fell victim to the New York City Public School System, a system that has willingly lowered the bar of standards, allowing entrance to many under qualified teachers, and cares only about ratings. Now, although I was always one of the brightest, I do feel that I have missed out on some basic textbook knowledge that was never even offered to me.
This concerns me now, but at the time, I could care less. Because of this behavior, my grades dropped and I barely made it into High school. It was then, when I found myself in a "last chance" type of school that I would become interested with knowledge. I wanted to be the best! I soon became the top math student - I kept that title till graduation! I was turning myself around.
Now, I have always had multiple hobbies. I would switch between them sometimes, pick up new ones, abandon old ones - I never kept with one. The funny thing is, every hobby I had, I thought was going to be my life’s work. Skateboarding, freestyle BMX'ing, special effects make-up artistry, the list goes on. But there is one area of interest that I dove into and never came out, and that's computer programming. I knew from the start that this was me, this is what I was going to be. So it's no wonder that I landed a scholarship to Polytechnic University, the second oldest technical university in the country!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Wow, thoughts about SETI? Where do I start? For the most part, when I first heard about SETI and SETI@home, I was thrilled. I couldn't believe that now there was a way that I could actually participate in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. I have always been a strong believer in the possibility that extraterrestrial intelligence exists and that, indeed, we share this universe with "others." To think otherwise shows narrowmindedness and a true lack of imagination.
Being part of the SETI@home team is a true honor, to say the least. Whenever I receive a certificate via email or I see my little "SETIan" hard at work, I just smile and take pleasure in thinking, "The world's in for a change and I'm helping it happen!"
