Personal background
I live in eastern Canada near the ocean. I am nearly 60 now and have been a science fact and fiction fan all my life. I just heard about the home version of SETI last year and have it running now. I have a telescope and like nice starry nights. It's easy here to find very dark areas to observe with no interfering lights. Computers are my business and my hobby.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET exist? If life exists here on this planet what makes us think that we are unique in the universe. The very fact that we exist means others must also. The vast distances involved means that it may be a long time before we contact another race of beings. They must also be either sending signals or have the ability to receive as well. They may be beyond that point and may realize that advertising their presence may not be in their best interest. No telling what you might attract. Any radio signals received would only tell us that there is another radio user race out there. What that would imply I have no idea.
I run SETI at home simply to help out. I would hope that some signals would be received in my lifetime. It sure would make for some interesting times.
I just surely hope that no race is on its way here now. Any race that advanced is not coming here for our benefit. It would take a lot of energy to get here and they would be looking to make it worth their while. Or maybe we are just simply not worth bothering with.
