Personal background
I am 17 years of age and counting in the not so tiny town of Chicago. I remember first starting SETI@home after I stumbled upon it while surfing the Internet. I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. As long as I can remember I have been interested in the stars, radio, etc, The things that make you a geek. Anywho, I found this project too good to pass up, and since the summer of 2000, I have been participating in the program. Nearly a year ago, I was introduced to the movie "Contact", which excited my interest in this field, and continues to this very day. I dont know exactly where my upcoming college carrer will take me, but perhaps searching for little green men will be part of it...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI at home is a wonderful opportunity to expand our researching capabilities. It is simply another tool in the "search". Upon first learning about SETI at home I questioned its security. How do we know the results are not tampered with? and other questions of the like plagued me. But soon enough I came to realize that a user trying to fake a signal would be an impossibility. With that notion put to rest, I began to think just how lovely it would be if I were the one to discover intelligent life. Just how famous I might become. How widespread my name would be. But then I realized that this would also most likely be an impossibility due to the fact that users listen to pre-recorded signals from the stars, and any chance of me actually recieving a message before a lab somewhere would be minimal. I cannot continue putting myself down in this way. I suppose, overall, I am happy to help. Happy to be a part of the Search For Extraterrestrial Life. At home for now...
