Personal background |
Introduction:
Today we are in the meth capital of the world, Iowa, where more pigs than people
reside. As our guest we have the seti@home specialists Melissa and Claus. Before
we start with the interview I'll brief you a little of their background.
Computers have always been a part of Melissa and Claus' relationship. So it is no
surprise that they met on the Internet while chatting on ISCA BBS. Now they are
married for over 7 years and have a fairly sized collection of computers (see below).
Melissa and Claus have first hand experiences with aliens since Claus is one of them.
His home planet is Deutschplanet, which is about an 8-13 hour flight away, depending
on the solar winds. Claus did not acknowledged nor denied that he has meet the
Men In Black. Melissa, however, did mention that she had her share of trouble with him.
Browse over to www.niesens.com to find more out about them.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?Claus: No, I doubt that there are any aliens besides me.Melissa: I think there is a possibility. I think the possibility that it resembles us or is able to communicate with us is very slim. I think if
it is ever found, it might shatter what we think of as necessary for life to exist... e.g. why does life have to be carbon based, just because it is here? A different type of life may have different requirements for environment,
temperatures, atmospheres, maybe they aren't made with DNA or cells or amino acids, etcConsidering your view of the extraterrestrial life being so drastically different than the human species, do you belief that the seti@home project will get us closer to find them?Melissa:I doubt it, but it is a slight possibility.Claus: Well Smokey and the Bandit, Convoy, and Cannonball Run did it for me. I love the monkey in Cannonball Run. I doubt the seti@home project will help find extraterrestrial life.So why then do you run seti@home?Melissa: I don't. I did because it was kind of neat... a novel idea. And it still is. It doesn't take much, i.e. since it's done when I'm not using the computer, it's no big deal. And in that slight off chance that it will find something, it would be neat to be part of that.Although, if I could use the extra clock cycles for something like curing cancer, I would probably install that and drop seti.Claus: We might find something else that is interesting out there. Besides the computers are running anyway and seti@home gives them something to do. That way they aren't bored to death. Oh yeah, then there is the brag factor: "I'm in the 98.8 percentile" you know the I have a larger one issue.Any final words or comments?Claus: Nanu, nanu!Melissa: what is this, a survey on their site??? |
