Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

I believe that the ultimate utility of SETI@Home lies not in its own inherent possibility of locating radio signals, although such an event would certainly be hailed as revolutionary, but rather the other sorts of knowledge and understanding it offers us with. Also, the continuation of SETI raises the issue of alien life to a higher prominence in public arenas, perhaps inviting the possibility of funding for other SETI projects bessides merely documenting radio waves.

However, if Extraterrestial life does exist, I personally would be cautious about advertising Terran presence in the galaxy until we could at least develop a feasible means of defence against any alien attacker. It would not do to bring upon ourselves a war for which we have absolutely no preparation.
