Personal background

*** Warning: The following text contains sarcasm! :) ***

I'm a strange individual who is misguided enough to believe that I'm in control of the computers and not the other way around. I was born in the Oregon state capital of Salem several years ago (a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away!). I have a BS in Software Engineering from the Oregon Institute of Technology and not quite enough credits for an AS in Mathematics.

I live in the vast metropolis of Albany, Oregon which is located about 30 miles from the state capital. Needless to say, I have mastered many means of escaping the area. I bicycle, sporadically rollerblade, skateboarded previously, went white water rafting a few times, and own two vehicles.

I have experience in C/C programming, setting VCR times, MFC and OWL development, repelling pod people, and other useful skills that are required to navigate one through the creative mayhem of day to day living.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

Does ET life exist? Why not? If it's an infinite universe, I figure that the number of planets with life on them has got be more than one. Maybe we were the test case - version 1.0, but thinking that we're the only ones out there is pretty narrow minded.

I can't honestly find a reason that they'd want to talk to us, but it is only neighborly to say "hi" anyone else out there. What we send probably isn't as important. Do we have anything interesting to say? It is possible to use mathmatics in an attempt to describe the format of information that is transmitted, but it is impossible to say if images or videos would be understandable to other forms of life. I really think they would be missing out if imagery of life on Earth isn't perceivable in the same manner. The greatest accomplishment that humans have attained on other planets has been, in my opinion, sending back images. We are ruled by our sight, but that may not be so for other forms of life. Unless we had bidirectional communication with life on another world, how could we know what to send and how to format it?

One thing to keep in mind is that we may be missing something that is fundamental in understanding potential extra terrestrial communications. We can't even communicate with other species on this planet in their native tongues yet. Not that I expect to have an intellectual conversation with an aardvark, mind you. I would be really grateful if we could have vehicles that can yell "Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!" to deer when they try to cross the road. To them, cars move like very fast predators and are alive. In the case of ET life and understanding, we may be the deer and neither one understands the other yet.

As far as finding ET life using SETI goes, my opinion is that you can't do something if you never try. Sure, the odds against it are much worse than winning the lottery...but that doesn't stop people from playing :)
