Personal background
My son (4 years old) told me that I should help to look for the aliens (cute huh?) When I asked him why he told me that he wanted to talk to them. I asked him what he'd say to them, and he replied "I want to sing them the ABC's!!!

At first I thought it was cute, then I got to thinking. He's very proud that he's learned his alphabet, and he wants to share his achievements with others. I got to thinking, I feel the same way. I think we have much to offer the universe, given a chance.

My son was dead serious and sits for hours watching the data spill across my screen, hoping for some exciting message telling him that he can now sing his song to other races in the galaxy. I know in my head that it's a childish fantasy. That he'll someday be able to sing the ABC's to another being from another world is nigh impossible, but I see the hope in his eyes. He watches all the shows about contact with other worlds and can repeat many lines from many movies. His favorite movie is Contact with Jody Foster. When my father-in-law askes him how he knows that aliens exist he says, "I don't, but it would seem like an big waste of space."

I know in my head that the chances of finding other beings in my lifetime (or his) is slim to none, but my heart says otherwise. My heart tells me that his dream isn't foolish, or that it's a waste of time and resources. My heart tells me that someone else is out there, and that maybe, just maybe, somewhere out there is a child on another planet that wants to sing his ABC's to my son.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
E.T. life does exist. I cannot believe otherwise. I don't know how, or when we will discover it, but I know that someday we will. I see many dangers of this discovery. Our small-minded view of our world and of the universe will be forever changed, but the benifits of such contact would be enormous. Not just technological advances, but philosophies and artistic creations could be shared between worlds. In just the last 50 years our opinion of other life forms has changed dramaticly. The "They Came to Eat Our Brains" movies of the 50's are almost gone entirely. We now see movies of communication and cooperation with other life forms. Our culture is almost ready to join the rest of the universe, with just a little more education and more open minds in power, we could offer alot to the universe.
We need to continue sending messages out from our world. We should send cultural and scientific data to share with the universe. Maybe someone out there will see something in us that makes us worthy to talk to. Send out our music, send out our literature, send out our history. We have made many mistakes in the past and those should be part of our message. Let others know who we are, and where we came from. Don't sugar-coat anything. Show the universe that we have risen from the ashes of strife and are progressing faster every day towards fulfilling our potential.
My previous message tells the story of why I run the program. It's a good project and should be pursued to it's fullest. This is a tremendous start and will aid the search.
