Profile: Ty

Personal background
My name is Ty and I am a 21 female student from the UK. I am currently in the final year of my Cultural and Media studies BA but have an almost rabid interest in all things science... :)
My interests apart from science and my degree (lol) are reading, film and music basically, I am a huge fan of nu-wave punk and classic orchestral, Mozart being my favorite composer and NOFX being my favorite punk band....
Film, TV and book wise, it's sci-fi all the way, although I wouldn't describe myself as a trekkie, or B5-er or anything, I just like the whole realm in general although my real love is the classics (Asimov, Clarke et al.)
As far as the realms of science are concerned I am obsessed with chaos and fractal theory and the areas of quantum and superstring theory... I guess I'm just looking for my own grand theory of everything!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The question of extraterrestrial life is one that I have always been interested in, but still have no really clear opinions on... :) I think that even just thinking about the statistics, there must be something (or someone!) out there but I have very little patience for airy fairy LGM movies about aliens 'saving' mankind.. it just strikes me as a little neat to have these benevolant humanoid aliens watching us.... not that I don't enjoy playing with the idea though! My opinion is that if there is alien life out there then it's 'alien' and as such, beyond anything we can really visualise right now, of course, if there were superintelligent blue 8ft marshians outh there then I wouldn't complain...!
I've not even got a guess as far as when we might discover other life is concerned, although I'm pinning my hopes on europa....
The main dangers of contact are probably attitude based as far as I'm concerned.. There are a lot of scared, narrow minded people out there and although I'm sure most of us like to think that everyone would welcome ET contact, I'm sure there would be a few crackpots who would freak out, not to mention the mad religion types who would take it as proof against god... benefits is a hard one to think about without the aforementioned gooey-ness...(lol) But being a sci-fi fan, ster trek style space travel would be my birthday cake candle style wish! I would ove to see the galaxy, and there is no chance that we will come up with that technology in my lifetime so....
as far as beacons are concerned, I would include art and music as these are the things that anyone can understand and convey what makes the human spirit...
and as far as why I run the Seti@home program... well, any way to help science is OK by me, and how cool would it be to be the one who found the important chunk of random data!!! lol
