Personal background
I am of Ukrainian descent, born in Germany.
I immigrated to the US with my parents when I was 2 years old.
I was drafted and served in the Army in Viet Nam and became a US citizen.
  (Yes, in that order.
I fought for my country before it was my country.)
I've got a great wife and three wonderful kids that I'm very proud of.
  Now, I work with computers.
As for a hobby, I am a member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP).
I joined and got back into uniform even though when I got out of the Army, I swore that I'd never wear a uniform again.
I'm fond of saying that "The Army wanted me to be all that I could be.
I wanted to be a Civilian.
  They said 'No'."
But, my youngest son belongs to CAP and his squadron needed help.
  So, I joined.
It's a great group of people and a great mission

I'll say one thing, life as an officer sure beats life as an enlisted.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET exist?
  Why not?
  Should we find him/her/it?
  Yes!!!

Hey, wait a minute!!!
We are assuming that an intelligent ET will be sending a signal.
  But, we are intelligent.
We have the capability to send a signal.
But, we aren't sending a signal to anyone, are we?

Could it be that the other ET is in the same mess as we are?
Unable to mount a project to send a signal?
So why should we look for something that we ourselves are not doing?
It all sounds a bit strange to me.

Realize that when we do find ET, we will ALL be shaken to the core.
THEN, we will realize that we are all ONE people, because there is an intelligent "non-people" out there.
THEN, we will put aside our petty squabbles and finally become civilized.
THAT would be the biggest benefit of SETI; the unification of humanity.
