Profile: Schmeiser

Personal background
I am a 50 year old federal government employee. I currently work for the US Air Force as the Systems Director for the 30th Weather Squadron at Vandenberg AFB, California. I retired from the Air Force after 20 years of active duty in 2001 and began my second career as a federal employee.

During my military sefvice I was a weather forecaster, a solar analyst at Ramey Solar Observatory in Puerto Rico where I rubbed elbows with Dr. Mike Davis of the Arecibo Telescope, and an enlisted laiison with the NOAA Space Environment Center in Boulder, Colorado. I wrote the first official formal training course for Space Weather Forecasting for the Air Force in 1998-1999. I have been married for 28 years to Anne Becker of Walden, New York and have three children -- Matthew, 27 years old and serving in the US Marines, Lara, 23 years old and an anthropology major from Chico State, and John, 21 years old and attending college. All three children are married and have given me four grandchildren so far, two boys and two girls.

My hobbies include dabbling in astronomy, solar studies and general science, reading everything from sci-fi to history, Civil War Living History reenactment, and riding both on and off road motorcycles.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I want to help be a part of the potential hisory of the project. I thought I was running SETI@home for the past two years, but recently found my account was never activated.

2. I would rather see money poured into the project than into many other government adventures. However, I'm not sure what the results will be or if the project will ever pay off. It seems to be kind of like taking fast shutter speed flash photos of stars. You just can't point at a target long enough and still cover the rest of the sky.

3. Suggestions? No, sorry. Other than very expensive large base-line space-based telescopes that can canvas larges chunks of space at once and for long periods, I can't think of a thing.
