Profile: Andrew Freeborn

Personal background
I live in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Although I work for a company that is primarily a a Web design studio, I develop shareware.

In my Copious Free Time I appreciate fine motor vehicles, music, science fiction and wine and sometimes I play the violin. Many other interests such as archery, astronomy, numismatics and the construction of a rail gun go completely ignored due to a lack of time.

My girlfriend is the most wonderful woman in the world and the only 2 things I would change about my life are the fact that she lives 800Km away in Cape Town and the fact that I do not have One Billion Dollars.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first heard of SETI@home when it was in beta. Having pondered the volume of data produced by the SETI project many times, I realised that this was a opportunity to make a tangible contribution to something interesting, unusual and which, if successful, could alter our way of life irrevocably.

Eventually, I started running SETI@home in about March 2000 and, with the exception of one week when I lost the faith and donated my spare cycles to cancer research, have been running continuously since then.

I believe that the odds of the existence of extraterrestrial life are good. I cannot pass an opinion on the nature of this life or the likelihood that we will be able to either find it or communicate with it.
