Personal background
I live in Maryland with my wife and two children. I am employed by the US government and work in the Civilian Human Resources Department at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, (CHR - USUHS). I am currently running SETI on two machines at home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, there is definitely extraterrestrial life. NASA discovered evidence of extraterrestrial life a few years ago in an old space rock. I think the real question is "Is there advanced or intelligent extraterrestrial life?" To this, I would say, probably. I think that the SETI project is an excellent start and maybe we will find something. Another possibility in our search for intelligent alien life would be that they discover us via transmissions from earth. It is hard to imagine the benefits or dangers of encountering intelligent extraterrestrial life would present, given all the possibilities. If nothing else, we would know for sure that we are not alone in the universe.

2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send? I believe humans have already begun transmitting signals for others in the form of our broadcasts from earth. Unfortunately, some of the broadcasts might not be transmitting messages we would want to share with alien cultures. Given the vastness of space, another option to broadcast signals would be to send some more probes into space like Voyager and then have the probes transmit messages or perhaps just transmit a simple beep like Sputnik. If we send enough of these out into space, our chances would increase.

3. Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? I run SETI@Home because I think it marks a turning point in the history of scientific research. The SETI@Home project allows all of humanity to participate in meaningful research and this is why I wanted to be part of this historic project. All you have to do is load it onto your computer and let it run. I even started a user group and some friends joined.
