Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1) Extraterrestrials do exist. It's inconceivable that, in a nearly-infinite (expanding)universe, Earth is the only planet that currrently supports life.
2) Tough question. If we do transmit a beacon, will that just attract a race of creatures that will wipe us out? I think we must assume that, because Humans, in their appetite for war, will no doubt wage war upon whatever entity finds us. I think, therefore, that we should not send any beacon signal.
3) Because of our penchant for death, we can only assume (for the worst) that anything we find will also have the same appetites, but hope (for the best) that they are peaceful/benign. I run SETI@home, because I hope we are the first to find them, and at least give us some kind of warning before we are overwhelmed by their (assumed) superior technology. |
