Personal background
I'm an 18 year old Student and part time Web Designer. I've just finshed an incredibly exciting 2-year Computer studies course at college and am staying on to do a Computer graphics course. Wed design is what i do for a living and it's also kind of a hobby, my site (http://www.j-dogg.co.uk) is probably one of the most pointless sites in existence, and i am always adding new(and pointless) sections to it, quie good fun really :). I have a fair few other hobbies, i live on the internet downloading music and anything deemed cool. I love going to London and spending pots of cash, ten-pin bowling is great too although i'm not great at it! i'm always going to the cinema with my friends too - how can i resist with my wonderful 50p student discount? *sigh*.
For just over a year now i've also been playing guitar, well trying to anyway! and as soon as i find a drummer i'll have a band, god help anyone in earshot is all i can say! I think i've written enough about myself now, any more would just bore the hell outa people - if what i've written hasn't already of course :)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think SETI and SETI@home are both great ideas, moreso SETI@home as it lets the average internet user, such as myself become involved in such an interesting and intruiging project. It is one of the best thing i've found on the internet for a long time, i know a pointless site when i see it(i made one!) and this one sure isn't!
I definitely think extraterrestrial life exists, for a start the universe is such a vast place, inconcieveably so, and to think we are the only intellegent life is mad, and somewhat depressing. In my opinion we won't find life, it will find us, and may well have been here already and be monitoring us from a distance. I know i'm sounding like i should be in a padded cell by now, but it's possible, and i don't think any other race would reveal themselves to us even if they had been here. Anyone who monitored this planet would see the human race has a less than harmonious existence. And quite honestly how can we expect to succesfully communicate and have a lasting relationship with another race when there is such divide and conflict in our own. The presence of extraterrestrials could be quite dangerous to this end, you would have nations fighting over contact etc. Maybe i'm getting way ahead of myself here, or maybe i'm adopting a negative attitude, there would be alot of benefits to alien contact, but i think that the human race isn't advanced, mature or ready enough for it as a whole. Benefits of such a discovery, and possible future contact with another race are mind boggling, it would greatly broaden the horizons of our race, and the scientific advancements we could make would be incredible! Personally i think a beacon would be a great idea, our race has long taken into account of the chance of alien life finding our deep space satellites, and attatched that small plate full of information concerning our race, location of the planet etc. Everything the beacon qould require is there in my opinion, it would require some alteration but generally is a good template.
