Personal background |
Not too much I can say about myself. I live in Lincoln, Nebraska, a poor and underpaid manager at a major office supply retailer. My machine that I run is a Windows XP Professional system, running on dual Athlon MP 1900's (which run at 1.6GHz each), 512MB RAM, and roughly 64GB of space across my three hard drives. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I've been doomed by mathematics where my SETI@home average is concerned. Due to my recent upgrade, my computer can now process a single SETI@home work unit in roughly 4 hours, 40 minutes. However, since I've racked up so many hours on my previous systems, my average per work unit won't be down to 5 hours until I've processed 28,321 work units. That means, that if I let SETI@home run for 16 hours a day, seven days a week, I'll hit 28,321 in a little over 24 years. Or, if I let it run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, I'll hit it in just over 16 years. Or, I could buy 16 more computers just like the ones I have now, and have it over and done with in a year. But, I'd probably end up spending around $16,000 for those...and that's not in the cards anytime soon. |
